Good morning,
I am not a computer wiz so if you can help me, please use
plain english that I may be able to follow. Thank you
I have been trying off and on for 2 weeks to run a defrag
on my pc. I've let it run all night but it keeps
restarting and will not finish. I've cleared out all my
temp files and emptied the trash. I've tried it with my
anti-virus turned on and off. Doesn't make any difference.
Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Patty

Run Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode.
To start Windows in safe mode Click Start, and then click Shut down. Click Restart, click OK, and then press and hold the CTRL key until the Microsoft Windows 98 Start-up Menu appears. For some machines, you can use F8 instead of CTRL to bring up the Microsoft Windows 98 Start-up Menu. Enter the number for Safe mode, and then press ENTER.
Notes In safe mode, Windows uses default settings (VGA monitor, no network, Microsoft mouse driver, and the minimum device drivers required to start Windows). You will not have access to CD-ROM drives, printers, or other devices.

Here's the answer to your problem, Patty. You need to have the newest
defrag program in your Windows directory in order to run without
constant headaches. Here's what to do to see which defrag program you
currently have.
Use Windows Explorer on your computer to shows your C drive and all the
files on your computer. Once you open Windows Explorer...go down to the
file folder called "Windows" and open it (you may get a warning about
opening this folder --- open it anyway).
Once the "Windows folder" is open you'll see numerous folders...go past
the folders and look for "Defrag" - Click once on it to highlight it...
then right click...and then select properties.... click on the tab that
says "version"... if it doesn't say 4.90.3000... your version of
of "defrag" will cause you constant headaches.
If you find you're operating with an old defrag program and want to get
the one that works consistently without problem... go here
http://aroundcny.com/technofile/texts/tec060902.html
and read more. You'll also find the zipped defrag program for download.
Hope this is easy enough for you. Good luck.
Good luck.
