Windows 98 hangs on shutdown

I have just reinstalled Windows 98 on a new hard drive
replacing a crashed and unrecoverable hard drive. But
everytime I try to shutdown it hangs.

I'm told there's a patch available, but can't find it on
the Windows site.

Don't start with the patch. Check other things first. See these pages:
