Does any one know if there is an upper limit on how much
memory windows 98 SE can use or accept?  Every time I try
to upgrade beyond 512 meg, whether it's adding my 2 256meg
chips to the new 512meg, or adding the new 512 in sequence
with the 2 256megs, windows screws up royally and will not
work.  And, no, this isn't a motherboard problem, because
it will work with up to 1.5Gig of sdram, and will use up
to 512meg-size pc-133 chips.  Yet trying to go over 512
causes errors.  Anyone else run into this problem?

Yes!!
The problem is related to VCACHE, and to fix it you must
add these two line in your system.ini file:

[VCache]
MinFileCache=524288
MaxFileCache=526336

more info can be found in the KB

I sure would not recommend the   minfilecache=524288 .
MaxFileCache=524288 is really the only one you should need.

You can have up to 512 mb memory without changing anything. Over 512 mb you should read:
"Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM Installed
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;253912

With memory in excess of 1 gb you may encounter further problems:
PRB: Blue Screen Appears When You Start Computer with 1 GB or More of RAM
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;311871

Error Message: Insufficient Memory to Initialize Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;184447

Computer May Reboot Continuously with More Than 1.5 GB of RAM
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304943

Hope this helps.

I would move the 512MB module to the first bank.  Dump the 256 modules from
your system.
