HELP - printer driver will not install!

The other day I got one of those "WINWORD caused a general
protection fault in module HPFWIN13.DLL" messages (i.e. I
could no longer print out any worddocs) so I decided to
uninstall my printer driver using the 'add/delete' feature
in the control panel.  For some reason, nothing did
uninstall (but the 'printer' feature was no longer listed
in 'add/delete'), so I started to manually remove all the
corresponding software (folders) I could find and
proceeded to downlown a new driver for my DeskJet712C from
the HP website.

When I tried to re-install it gave me the following
message: "HP Deskjet710C Series software is currently
installed on this PC.  To reinstall software you must
first select uninstall, reboot the PC, and then select
reinstall again."  Only I can't seem to find any more
hidden leftover componants from the old driver that are
preventing the new one from installing all the way.

Anybody have an idea what I'm doing wrong?  Is there a way
to get rid of these pesky leftovers and clean them out?

Any help appreciated.

Patty,

Thanks for the tip.  I have actually been to that page
before but had hoped to avoid going into the registry
(plus the page seems to pertain to winxp, not win98). I
just did anyway but the problem is this: when I perform
step 6. and 7., i.e.:
________

open regedit (e.g. click Start, key regedit and press
Enter)

navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\E
nvironments\Windows NT x86\Drivers

under this key, there will be the keys Version-2 and
Version-3 (one or the other of these may be absent - not a
problem)

the sub-keys under these contain the printer driver
configuration information

delete all the sub-keys inside Version-2 and Version-3,
but not these keys themselves
________

I only get
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\E
nvironments\Windows 4.0

There are no "keys Version-2 and Version-3" and thus there
are no "sub-keys inside Version-2 and Version-3" to delete.

Is there a 'clean printer drivers' page for Windows 98?

Maybe helpful to read this article from HP

Thanks, Mary.  I actually ended up resolving it by trying
a few things.  I'll save that tinyurl.com page for next
time this happens. ;-)
