Ocassionally during or after a print job I'll get an 'illegal
operation' notice and the printer will disappear from the printer list.
Print job may finish or stop after some number of whole pages. Never partial
pages. Will get a quick flash of 'Printing page 1 of n pages' if I try to
print again but no printer icon on bottom tool bar and no print job. Can
reboot and all is well. Trying to figure out if it is a printer problem or a
W98 problem. Any suggestions for some kind of diagnostic tree to pin it
down?      Thanks.       Keith

If you are using McAfee VirusScan, then see this article from McAfee.

Spool32 Errors When Printing After Installing VirusScan on Windows 95, 98
and ME

If the printer is not a local printer, install the printer as a local
printer.  Once installed, go to the Printers folder, right-click the printer
icon and select Printer Properties. Click the Details tab and click the Add
Port button.  Click to select Other and then click OK. In the Port Name
dialog box, enter the path to the shared Network printer.  It will take the
form of \\server\SharedPrinterName.

Print directly to the printer.  In the printers folder, right-click the
printer icon and select Printer Properties.  Click the Details tab and click
the Spool Settings button.  Click to select Print directly to the printer.

If you happen to be on a Novel network, be sure to download and install the
latest client from Novell.

Thanks. Have Zone Alarm but Mcafee article gives me some ideas. Will
investigate. May try disarming ZA for a while and see what happens (or
doesn't) with the printer. Threat level here is pretty low so no ZA
shouldn't be to much of a problem.
