I want to install a printer that creates a jpeg file instead of actually
printing to a printer. i need this because i have an old scanner whose
software will only copy to a printer and i want to create jpegs that i can
e-mail. thanks for any help,

This is available from a number of manufacturers. For instance:

Gary,

you may want to check out GX2XS - www.gx2xs.info

We have our own printer drivers that when printed to will result in a
document in GX2XS.  From there - you are free to save / email the document
as PDF, GXD (our format), JPG, TIF, PNG, BMP, and Word DOC.

As well - we also allow direct import into our documents from a variety of
file formats - as well - as directly from scanners.

Best Regards,

You might want to check out SoftCopy:

 http://www.dobysoft.com/products/softcopy/index.html

It outputs directly to various image formats, including PNG and JPEG.
