'Spooler Proess' not responding after 1 print job

Hi All,

I have Win98SE, with all known patches, installed and working fine
(almost), using a HP DeskJet 722C printer.  My problem comes up whenever
I print something, anything.

When I print anything the printer icon shows up in the SysTray and the
job prints with no problems.  However, once the job has finished it is
not released from the spooler.  Any print jobs after the 1st one do not
get printed.  The only option I have is to reboot.

When I reboot I have to wait until the 'Spooler Process Not Responding'
dialog pops up so I can 'End Task'.  Even after doing this the computer
will not finish rebooting.  I have to either CTRL-ALT-DEL a number of
times OR I have to hit the 'Reset' button on the computer.  Once the
computer boots up I get a waring message about print jobs in the
spooler.  I am offered the chance to print or delete the job.

The end result of my problem is that I can only print 1 job then I have
to reboot my computer.  I can send 2 or more print jobs to the printer
but because of this problem only the 1st job gets printed.  And since
the job gets stuck in the spooler process it will never delete the job
even after it is printed.  In other words, I have to print ONLY 1 job at
a time, reboot and then print another job.

I have un-installed the printer driver several times and the problem
remains.  Do I 'Have To' bypass the spooler and print directly to the
printer (I would rather fix this problem, if possible)?

Thanks for any help,

Charles

I suggest that you first check the HP web site to see if there is a more
recent driver for your printer.  This reminds me of a problem that happened
in Win3x with HP printers and it was caused by HP overwriting the Windows
version of a file during the driver installation and their version of the
file caused this exact problem when printing to a network.  I know it's not
the same file (printman.exe) because Win98 doesn't use it, but updating the
driver might fix the problem if there was a problem with the one that you
have.

If that doesn't help, then I'd try clean booting to see if that helps:

Hi Patty,

I have already checked the HP web site and I am using the most current
version.  This problem only happened to me after I upgraded my
motherboard/CPU.  I am using the same Win98 SE version as I had before,
I am using the same HP drivers as I had before.  I had a Intel SE440BX
motherboard with a 450 MHz P3 and I had no printing problems.  Now I
have a Abit TH-7 RAID motherboard with a 2.0 GHz P4 and I have this
printing problem.

One other thing I should mention.  I have 1 Gig of memory on my new
computer and I did not have to modify the vcache section of the Win.Ini
file.  With the old computer I had out of memory problems when I
exceeded 512 MB and had to modify the vcache portion of the Win.Ini
file.  Could this have something to do with my problem?

I will try your suggestions and post back.

Thanks,

Charles

Have you tried printing directly to the port rather than spooling?  If the
only change was a new motherboard and memory, then that implies some kind of
a hardware problem, not a software problem.

Is this a clean installation of Windows since the new hardware or is this
the same installation that was on the system previous to the upgrade.  You
may not have all of the motherboard drivers installed. Check for any drivers
that came with the motherboard.  Also, check to make sure that all cables
are firmly plugged in.

If you haven't done a clean install, you might try a test installation to a
new folder.  If it doesn't work here, then I'd definitely look at the
hardware.

Hi Patty,

Please see in line responses:

I find that option greyed out and I can not select it.  I setup my new
computer to multi-boot MS-Dos 6.22, Win98 SE, Win2k and WinXP.  The only
printing problem I have is in Win98 SE.

I am going to check the HP web site to see if I can find out why the
print to print radio button is disabled.

Yes, this was a clean install.  I have checked everything you mention
and I can see nothing wrong.
