Spool 32 and "Printray.dll" errors, Windows ME

Hi!

I am new to the list, so please forgive me if this question refers to
problems that have been previously addressed. I tried unsuccessfully to
install an authorized US government mainframe link on my home computer
(I telework for NASA on a weekly basis), and it took my computer out
completely (everything froze). I have since resolved that issue, but I
have had nothing but problems with the system since. The most recent
(and most serious) is a Spool 32 error that prevents my HP Inkjet 520
from producing anything (though it seems to be communicating with the
CPU up to the point of preparing to cycle the paper), but for a while
now, I have had an annoying popup immediately post-boot telling me that
under "Printer.exe," "PrinTray.dll [is] not found."

Please, someone tell me what I do to resolve this? Reinstalling Windows
ME doesn't help, and the HP driver disk says not to use it with ME
(compatibility problems). The latest Explorer upgrade won't install
completely, either.

Should I just go back to my stone tablet and chisel?

I'd first try the suggestions in this article:

Assuming that your reinstall was over the existing Windows folder, you could
also try installing to a new folder.  If you have the disk space, you can do
this and then get back to the original system if desired.  If everything
works well in the new install, you will have to install your programs while
running the new installation if you want to keep this installation for
permanent use.

I assume that you still want the telelink installed so I would probably do
the Windows install and then the telelink and then the printer installation
without installing other things just to see if this works as it should.

Before this step, you might want to do some testing with clean booting.
Most often when installations fail - such as your telelink - the cause is
programs running in the background so this may help you install the telelink
and get the printer reinstalled as well.

I found one reference that Printray.exe is the System Try icon installed by
Lexmark inkjet printers.  Do you have a Lexmark Printer or did you?  If so,
I suggest that you go to Control Panel, Add/remove programs and remove any
software relating to it.  You can also remove the printer from the Printers
folder if it's there.  The information that I found said that Printray
sometimes interferes with parallel port devices.  Obviously, it is not
working correctly since the dll file is missing but simply disabling
Printray seems to clear up some problems.  Printray does not ship with
Windows and should not have anything to do with your HP printing but it
sounds like it could cause some problems.
