We have an HP LaserJet 5 that works great for everyone
except our Windows 98 clients. It'll print most of a page
ok, but then garble some of the characters. Doesn't seem
to be a pattern for what it garbles.
Tried dumbing down the driver to HP LaserJet 4, no luck.
Tried reinstalling PCL and PS drivers from HP, no luck
either.
This happened after we ran Windows Update, but
unfortunately there were so many updates we don't know
which one may have screwed up printing.
Anyone ever run into this before, and if so, what did you
do to fix it? TIA.

Boot to safe mode and remove all printers from the printers folder and all
printer software from Control Panel, Add/remove programs. Exit and restart
your system and then reinstall the driver. Be sure to check the
manufacturer's site to make sure that you are using the most recent driver.
