Recently, ive tried updating my yahoo messenger, and when i
attempted this, i was fronted with qiute a few error
messages, two of which told me that my regedit was corrupt.
I have been searching for a way to fix this, but other than
remote data retrieval, I cant seem to find any other ways,
PLEASE help me, what can i do?

Why not replace Regedit.exe with a good copy from your Win98 CD using
SFC?
Start-Run-SFC and extract one file.

Well, theres one prob, everywhere I have checked, i cannot
find a copy of win98SE, I dont have mine, and noone i know
has it either. Also, the reason my regedit is currupt in th
first place, is because I had gotten a win32hidrag virus,
and it made several system files go curupt, not jus my
regedit, but my SFC seems to not want to work either. Ive
tried all the obvious tacts to fix it, im jus wonderin what
else there is that I may be able to do, maybe a site I
could download that would patch it, or maybe someone could
send me nescessary fiels and i could place them manually,
anything would be useful, thanks.

You will not be able to effectively clean a virus infection without your
Windows installation CD.  They are available through E-Bay or the on-line
computer software stores, but they are becoming harder to find.

Have you checked that the installation files aren't on your hard disk drive?
Search for a folder containing a lot of files starting with WIN and ending
with CAB.

Are you quite sure that these files are corrupt?  Some viruses simply
prevent access to utilities such as REGEDIT and SFC to make the machine
difficult to clean.

Well, the virus is gone now, and im sure that the files are
corrupted because thats what it is telling me. If I cant
find the installation files on my harddrive, is there no
other way to restore it? Maybe a program or thid-party site
I could d/l the files from?

I don't know of any site where these files can be downloaded, but even if
they were available I would be very wary of using them.  The only safe
source is your installation CD.

What exactly is the message you are getting?

Aight, these are the three messages I get when I try to
install Yahoo:
#1- The C:\WINDOWS\REGEDIT.exe file appears to be currupt.
Reinstall the file and try again.
#2- Windows cannot run the program because it is in an
invalid format.
#3- Could not execute the external program C;\WINDOWS\regedit

What happens when you do Start / Run / Regedit / OK?

YAHOO does many weird things, but I am surprised that it would want to try
and run REGEDIT as an external program.  A virus, however, might try to do
exactly that.

I tried operating the regedit through run, and I got these
2 same messages as from the Yahoo installer:
#1- The C:\WINDOWS\REGEDIT.exe file appears to be currupt.
Reinstall the file and try again.
#2- Windows cannot run the program because it is in an
invalid format.

I have a virus scanner, do you think its possible my
scanner is either not detecting a virus in the yahoo
installer or could it be something else that is wrong?

If it is a virus it is not necessarily in the Yahoo Installer. The fact that
you get the message when you run REGEDIT from the Run menu option indicates
that the REGEDIT.EXE file is corrupt or that the file is infected.  It could
also indicate that the RUN association for EXE files has been taken over by
a virus, but if that was the case I would expect that you would see the
effect in other places.

Can you use the RUN option for other programs, such as MSCONFIG?

The testing indicates the problem is associated with REGEDIT, not the Yahoo
installer (although I don't understand why the installer uses REGEDIT) and
replacing REGEDIT.EXE is the logical next step.

It seems I can run MSCONFIG fine from run, but my SFC does
not work. I have gotten my hands on a WIN 98SE boot disk,
is there anyways to extract the regedit file from that, or
am I doomed to have to fork out the money for an install disk?

The boot disk (eg, www.bootdisk.com) does not have the files you need.
