When I open my shortcuts or desktops the window is only
about 4 inches square.
How do I change so they open in maximized size?
thanks

Right-click the shortcut, pick Properties, set it to run Maximized instead
of Normal.

If you cannot do what Jim suggests, then left click the edges of the
Window (only have one open when you do this) and drag them out to full
size (do not use the maximize button).  When it is finished, hold down
the ctrl key and close the Window.
