win2k back to win98se?????

After several attempts to get win2k setup to how I want/need it on a used
system I received from a relative, who had it setup for business on a
server, etc.etc., I'm going to take it back to win98se.
I'm assuming I need to reformat HD and start from scratch.
Anything I should be aware of? I've replaced HD's and installed win98se on
different systems with little problems but not sure how or what to be aware
of with a system that has/had win2k.

Suggestions please,
L.

Zap or Wipe freeware will remove all partition information so you can
start over fresh with FDisk.  Download here:

For information on installing W98, go to:

Ron,

Thanks for the info.
2- questions.
1. wipe works up to 8gigs. This system has a 40 gig HD and as far as I can
tell, no partitions (window explorer/ c: drive only--d:drive is cd).
2. drivers- do I need to open case and see what kind of hd, cd, modem, sound
card, etc. or is there an easier way with Win2k(device manager)?
I don't have any drivers(cd's) at this point but will ask relative if they
know of any laying around.
I could d/l them to this system and burn.

You don't need to zero out the entire drive--either program should work
OK so you can use fdisk.

I haven't used W2K but I would think that you could get the device
descriptions for the monitor, sound, video adapter, modem, etc., from
there and that may preclude having to crack the case.

Again, thanks.
I'll give it a try tomorrow AM when I get back to work.
Have the system there so I can work on it and work. :-)
If I can't get the info, I'm going to open it up anyway and install a cd-rw.
Will let you know.
Thanks,

L.

If you had Win2K using NTFS you havwe to remove NTFS
partition from HD.  You can download a program from MS
site to do this. You'll have to FDISK HD and create a
primary DOS partition. To do this you'll need bootable
Windows 98 floppies, also available as a download from MS
site. Once you create and format the HD you can install
Win98 from CD.

Just got done reformatting and loading win98se. Everything worked great.
Missing 2 drivers but will find. At least I thought about writing down what
everything is.
This will make it simpler for my mother-in-law. Nice clean system with very
little on it.

Ron,
If your still here.. Need assistance.
I'm having problems finding and loading drivers. Here's the situation.
When I opened Device Manager I have a folder named "other devices" with
these entries.

(yellow question mark)  PCI Communication Device ****
(  "    "           "        "     )  PCI Ethernet Controller
( "           "           "     "  )  PCI Multimedia Audio Device  ****
(   "        "               "      )  PCI System Management Bus ****

I found and "hopefully" loaded the Ethernet driver so now I have 3 entries,
marked with ***.

I thought I'd written down everything I needed (drivers) but apparently not.

The audio was/is    Fraunhofer Institut
                                Sipro Lab Telecom, Inc.

Not sure what I need to look for and where.

Help,,

I think what I would do is open the case and pull out the modem and
sound card.  Write down all the details listed on the devices and then
start using the Google search engine to try to locate information.  You
may find writing in several places on the devices and if so, do not list
everything you find in one search.  I have not gotten hits when I did
that but did get hits when I search individually.  Once you find the
specific brand and model number, do a search on that info and include
"driver" in the search criteria.

Update.
I found the ethernet Controller(Realtek RTL8139(A)), loaded and appears to
be OK.
Also found the (Aopen FM 56-px Controllerless PCI Modem) driver.
have not tried but the device manager is not listing as problem. YES

2 left-  Multimedia Audio Device and
           System Management Bus

Not sure what to do with the System Man. Bus.?.

The Audio I wrote down two different setting/sevices and not sure what to
look for.

Audio:       Fraunhofer Institut
                 Sipro Lab Telocom, Inc.

Sound:    Unimodem Full-duplex Audio device
                Soundmax Integrated Digital Audio

You're correct, the Lan card has all kinds of writting and numbers but it
appears I found the correct one.
