WAB Missing?

I'm having a heck of a time getting squared away after a reformat and
reinstall. When I type "WAB" in the START/RUN window I get the following
message:

Cannot find the file 'wab' (or one of its components). Make sure the path
and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.

When I search for "*.wab" I get several:

John Gregory C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book
173KB 7/13/03

JGK   C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book
202KB 1/10/03

JGK   C:\Program Files\Outlook Express
   202KB 1/10/03

John Gregory C:\My Files\Program Critical Files\WAB Files
   173KB 7/6/03

This message makes reference to "libraries". I don't know anything about
libraries. I simply copied the WAB and .pst files of Windows (or was it
Outlook Express?) and Outlook 2000.

Can anyone point me in the right direct?

Double-click one of the address book files in Windows Explorer to open it and determine which you are looking for.
John Gregory.wab in \WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book
or
JGK.wab in \WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

Just typing WAB in the Run box will give an error, as WAB is a file type, not a file.....you need to type the complete filename with the .wab extension, and the complete path to the file, if you want to use the Run box.  it is far simpler to create a shortcut to the file on your Start Menu or the Desktop.

Hi John,

I don't see a question--what are you trying to do?  If you are getting
an error message, please provide it verbatim and describe the conditions
that lead to the message appearing.

The message that is received is the one described in the original post.

In the run box, I typed "JGK.wab" and "JohnGregory.wab". Both returned the
same message.

I was told to run the WAB this way from someone answering the MS Support
Center... he's in China. He's also stumped and never commented when I
reported the results.

This was discovered while following instructions to eliminate a duplicate
search result when finding a CONTACT. When a name is typed in the search
box, two identical names are returned... but there is only one record.

That "JGK.wab" file should come up int he RUN command. The book appears to
be used by Outlook and I can pull it up by clicking the ADDRESS button on
Outlook or Outlook Express. I think something is in the wrong place after my
reformat of the hard drive and reinstallation of everything.

You got some bad info John.  The address book is opened by Outlook
Express and cannot be opened by entering its name in Run--that's why you
get the error message.  I suspect that you are getting duplicate search
results because you have several copies of the address book.  I don't
use profiles and I have one copy of the address book located at:

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

Yes, you are correct, Ron, now that I am reading the thread more clearly.
I do have a shortcut to my address book that I added to my Start menu myself...the target of that shortcut is merely:
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\wab.exe"
Apparently, wab.exe finds the current *.wab file and opens it.

I agree that the duplicate search results are probably due to the multiple copies of the address...the *.wab files.
OP probably needs to find the location of the default wab file on the system, by looking in this registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4\Wab File Name

Well gentlemen... here's the update. I identified the WAB in the registry
(John Gregory), went to the other and changed the name to JGK.oldWab,
rebooted, searched my Outlook Contacts and got.... the same duplicate entry.

Sooooo... I went to Find, typed JGK.oldWAB, and nothing came up. I then
searched for ALL wabs and got the same old list ...with one exception; JGK
was now JGK.oldWab. My attempt to change the  type of file to something
other than a wab didn't work so ... I guess... your suspicion could still be
correct; there are still two wab files that Outlook sees in the same
directory.

Q1) How do I change the extension of JGK.oldWab?
Q2) If I move the folder to a different location (or simply delete it since
there's another copy in the Program Files\Outlook Express directory) could I
be assured Outlook won't be searching for it?
Q3) I need to compare these two wabs and determine what to keep. What's the
easiest way to do this?

Open Explorer, click on view, folder options, view tab and mark:  show
all files    and remove the mark from:   Hide all file extensions.  Then
you can see what you are doing.

Don't delete--rename them until the problem is solved.  Then anything
that is named:    .old   can be removed.

Unless you have deleted a bunch of email addresses, the larger file will
be the right one.  To compare files, do a find on .wab     and double
click on them.  That will launch the address book and you can see what
is in the file.

If I don't delete nor change the extension, how do I render one of these
puppies inactive?

Move it from its current location.  But then you have to keep track
where you got it from in case you need to put it back.
