I have run into a problem trying to re-install Windows 98
on my Gateway G6-400 system using the Gateway System
Restoration CD-ROM.  During the part of the Windows 98
installation process where it checks the file system I get
the message "There is a crosslinked file on drive C.
Please run SCANDISK.EXE from Setup disk 1 or the Windows
CD-ROM to fix the problem. Setup cannot continue. "  I
have followed the instruction and run "scandisk", but it
does not find any crosslinked files.  I have
run "scandisk" both from the DOS prompt and from Windows
98 running in Safe Mode.  Neither approach finds any
crosslinked files.  I have done a search on the internet
for "crosslinked files" and the only solution I have found
is to run "scandisk".  I was hoping to find an alternate
tool that might also work for this problem.  I have found
none.  I have also run the disk defragmentation program
that is part of Windows 98, but it has had no effect on
this problem.

What are my options for fixing this problem?

Thanks to anyone who can assist.

You've done the usually effective steps. The most likely remaining problem
is either that the hard drive is failing or that the file system is so
corrupt that it isn't reparable. I would recommend backing up your entire
system, then wiping the hard drive completely with a clean format, then
install from scratch.

In terms of alternate tools, sure, Norton Disk Doctor is a superior product.
But the gap in effectiveness between NDD and ScanDisk is small compared to
the sizable gap between Norton's SpeedDisk vs. Windows defragger. In other
words, I would expect ScanDisk run in DOS to get pretty much everythingt
that can be gotten!

Jim:

Thanks.

I got pretty much the same recommendation from Gateway
Tech Support.  I am planning to try what you and they
suggest.

Thanks again.
