A client's computer has a worm that is so deep, the only
way to fix it is to reformat and reinstall Windows 98.
The only problem is he has no driver disks.  Is there any
way to retain the driver information for video, modem,
etc. before wiping the hard drive?

What is this worm's name--I have never seen a case where a
format/install is required.

What kind of a computer--have you checked the maker's web site?  I push
comes to shove, go into device manager and write down the description of
the devices and then do a search on the internet.

This is what is happening:  It is an older Compaq
computer.  I can't get any info at the website.  When IE6
is loaded, no matter what I do, it comes up
to "searchforit.com".  I have changed the page in Internet
Options, I have followed the Symantec suggestion and
edited the Registry, thought I got rid of it, only to have
it reappear.  I downloaded a worm fix from Norton, but the
computer won't open the file.  I get an error message
about some "restriction" on this computer.  It won't copy
the file or move the file either.  I don't know the name
of the worm.  I am at wit's end.  Have spent about six
hours on this and am sick of it.

Thanks.

I think this can be fixed.  There is a hijack program starting at boot
that is over writing the registry entry for the home page so no matter
how many times you change it, at reboot it will change back.

Try opening the worm fix again and report the exact message that is
given.  Some worms create various registry restrictions to make it
harder to clean up the PC.  However, these restrictions can always be
defeated one way or another.  Once the worm fix runs, all may be solved
and if not, we can then tackle whatever is left.
