I put in a new 80gig drive in addition to the old one, and an extra RAM chip.
At first, all seemed well, but now I notice the PC briefly slows down - I can
tell as the mouse cursor staggers / slow down for a few seconds while the
processor is doing something else.

I tried turning off the firewall and it still does it.

Any ideas?

Is this only since you installed the new HDD and memory? If so, I would
remove the new memory chip and see if this still occurs.
If not - Check what you have running in the background, you may also want to
run a spyware detection and removal. (Try Ad-Aware)
Check your startup items: start > run > msconfig > startup and untick any
you dont need - Be careful though!

Hope that helps.

Simon.
