asus p4p800 deluxe bios 1010 win 98se
Been working at it hours, so I'm asking for help now. I played with the
p ata and s ata settings and got my C and D hard drives set up on the
primary ide. But no matter what I try, I can't get the cd burner HP9100
to be recognized as secondary slave. I got the E hard drive working as
the secondary master so I know the cable is good. I've tried virtually
every master slave combo and am down to this:
I just hooked up the secondary ide to the HP drive and disconnected the
E drive altogether so it's not an issue. I tried the HP at master,
slave, and cable select setting and tried both connectors of the ide
cable.
I'm at my wits end. To top it off, the HP IS recognized in bios but NOT
win 98SE. I hope this is a clue for someone as to what I'm doing wrong.
I don't know if it means anything but in control panel/system it shows a
standard dual pci ide controller working fine, but a primary and
secondary ide controller single fifo are both with a yellow exclamation
point. I deleted and rebooted multiple times and that still didn't help.
As an aside, a pci multimedia audio device, system management bus, and
universal serial bus also have errors in control panel but unless that
has to do with the CD drive, I don't care at this point.
There is something fundamentally wrong here so please enlighten me. Also
I'm confused about the enhanced setting vs compatible for my
motherboard. The drives are recognized more accurately under enhanced
even with win 98se (manual says use compatible). I mean they show up on
the first ide whereas if it's set to compatible, it's on the third
whatever that means. I don't have a third lol.
Thanks for your help and I'm sure this is something simple.

Your problem is most likely the yellow ! in front of the ide controllers.
Typically, it means the drives are running in dos compatibility mode (slows
down your harddrive and any atapi device like a cd will not be recognized).
The first try would be to use the Noide fix provided in article one and then
remove the ide controllers in device manager. Reboot and the controllers
will be installed on boot up. See if that fixes the problem
If not you may want to dig a little4 deeper into the articles
