Windows Forum / Windows 98 / Setup / March 2004upgrade from win95 to win98
I have windows 95, when I try to upgrade to 98 with the disc I get a message that says I already have an operating system. I need the win98 for DSL. Help please! You have the installation disk and program for an installation in a new computer. What you would need is an upgrade disk from 95 to 98. Others may have a way to suggest if it's possible to install your current disk without removing and installing the new version. Only with a partition and boot manager such as PartitionMagic / BootMagic, as far as I know. The reason is, both systems need to install on the C: drive - they can't install on any other drive, even if it's a primary partition (again, as far as I know from what I've learned recently). What PM / BM do is make partitions visible or invisible, so each OS thinks it is the only one. However, PM / BM are not freebies. The other option is to boot from the Win98 CD and choose "Start MS-DOS with CD support". That will allow you to get to the prompt without running Windows, and from there you can reformat the C: drive to wipe the old OS off it. Of course, you will have to archive everything you want to save before doing this since the format is final!
