I bought Windows 98Se about three years ago and installed
it just fine, registered it etc. A month or so ago I was
having some serious problems after installing SBC Yahoo
Dial Up. Got tired of the aggrevation and greif so I
unistalled everything I could and decided to reinstall
Win98 SE. Big mistake. I reformatted the C drive and got
the files to download onto it from my 98SE cd but when I
started the C:\setup.exe I got to a license page that
said setup searched my computer and couldn't find any
qualifying products and could not proceed with
installation. I called Microsoft support and they were
kind enough to inform me that Win98 SE needed something
to install to like Win95 and that apparently that is what
I had on my computer when I installed 98SE. They siad I
needed to install Win95 again and then 98SE should
install just fine. I went to Ebay located a new sealed
copy of Windows 95, bid, won, paid, and then someone from
Microsoft said the seller couldn't due that and the item
was delisted, some kind of licenseing problem or
something. Where can I get a legal, licenseable, useable,
copy of Windows 95, and what should I look for? There's
copies for distribution with new computers only, there's
copies with usb support, copies on a dozen floppies, do I
need a COA, ID#, key# etc. Thanks for any help you can
give me. Signed, Totaly Lost and Confused, not to mention
out $27.00.

You might find that you can purchase a full version of Win98SE for about the
same price as you can get Windows 95.

What you have is an upgrade version of Win98SE that requires that you have
an earlier version of Windows.  This earlier version does not have to be
installed on your system but you need to be able to insert the CD or
diskettes when prompted (the compliance check).  It is examined by the
installer and then the installation will continue.  If the earlier version
is installed on your system, then the installer does not ask for the earlier
version.
