I have a dell with win98 2nd edition. For no apparent
reason, it suddenly would not load past the initial
blue/cloud windows 98 strart screen.
I tried re-loading win 98 and everything appeared ok but I
can't get past the Win98 starting for the first time
screen. Is there anything I can do or must I reforrmat the
hard drive?

Before reformatting etc, you may want to do some testing on your
hardware, test RAM with something like memtest86 - do the extended
tests.
Next run the diagnostic software from the manufacturer of your HDD.

If you do a ctrl alt del and find that Explorer is not running, many people
have gotten relief for this kind of problem by following the fix described
