I have a dell with win98 2nd edition. For no apparent reason, it suddenly would not load past the initial blue/cloud windows 98 strart screen. I tried re-loading win 98 and everything appeared ok but I can't get past the Win98 starting for the first time screen. Before reformatting etc, you may want to do some testing on your hardware, test RAM with something like memtest86 - do the extended tests.
