W98 re-install problem

I'm trying to sort out a problem for a friend. They have a mature
installation of W98se on a laptop which works well except that suddenly about
10 days ago it started acting slightly oddly. Various things work when
approached one way, but not another eg a Word document will open from within
Word, but opens after about 5 minutes if clicked from Explorer. We have virus
checked with 2 apps and removed (eventually - that's another function that is
slow) redundant programs.

We tried to re-install W98 from the original SE CD, but it hangs or slows to
impossibly slow when it reaches the "inspecting your computer" bit. The
slow/stop is reproducible by program function and doesn't seem related to
overheating.

What can we try? Don't want to format and start again unless we absolutely
have to.

Spyware/scumware/adware are causing numerous system problems.  I recommend
you download and use the following programs and consider removing everything
these programs identify.  Be aware that there are frequent updates to these
programs and you need to check for them before every use.

AdAware:  http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

CWShredder:  http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html (download
link near the bottom)

Spybot:  http://www.safer-networking.org/

Adaware and Spybot were tried both in normal and safe mode, but to no avail.
Thanks for the reply, Ron. Eventually the problem was tracked down to
EVNTSVC.EXE which says it is a scheduling program that relates to the Real
One Player. It was running constantly with a processor usage of between 85
and 100%.

To stop it we had to close down its associated process and then we were able
to rename the .exe file. The process restarts itself so you have to be fairly
quick.

I'm not sure whether to blame Real or whether some malware had hidden itself
within the program. Do virus and these adware checkers actually check open
files and running programs???

Some do as I have had to reboot and then the program (forget which one) ran
again before Windows started.
