1) scanreg /fix hangs 5% out in checkin system.dat
2) winxp refuses to upgrade win98se due to registry fault

I have tried everything. Even exportet registry to a file,
and then recreated it from that file. Still faulty :-(

Norton WinDoctor find no fault, neither do RegClean.

What now?  Any ideas on what is wrong and how to find it?

How large is the System.dat file?  Scanreg /fix is known to have
problems when System.dat is large than 8.0 mb.

Try using Scanreg /Opt to compact the registry first.

Note:  If you boot direct to the command prompt or with a startup disk
then you should run SMARTDRV before using Scanreg.  It speeds things
up enormously.

Also you might try another registry cleaner.  I have had good results
with RegSeeker (free) from http://www.snapfiles.com/get/regseeker.html

Good luck
