Windows Forum / Windows 98 / Setup / November 2004windows explorer keeps causing system to crash
Hi all, this is fairly recent, within the last week, but I started crashing when opening or closing stuff when the windows explorer was open or when I tried to open or close it when other things are running. typically I have my Eudora mail program open, Textpad, Windows Explorer, MSIE, and at times opening the FTP program to upload changes to the websites I work on. Most things go along pretty well, but it seems whenever the windows explorer is open is when it crashes... my question is, would simply extracting explore.exe from the .cabs and overwriting the existing file probably fix this? or is a reinstall of windows indicated? I get no error messages, it either just freezes the screen or goes completely black. After a couple of crashes in a row, if I reinstall the video drivers that seems to fix it for a while, but I think those are getting corrupted from the other failures.. any wisdom greatly appreciated. thanks, niteowl You might try restoring a registry from before this started happening if one exists. I've lost most of the icons on the system tray, and have closed down all programs, I can't bring up the task manager with a CAD, but my textpad program will still come up, that how I was able to save the above error details... does that help anybody, it's all greek to me. I did get a low memory error and low system resources message, said to reboot as some programs might become unstable because of it. I didn't reboot but closed a bunch of stuff and the resources were showing at about 20%.. right now with nothing running and the error message still showing on the screen it says, I'm at 38% system resources. ?? Several files are checked for version and integrity during this process and it could take care of your problem. I went into msconfig and disabled a few things.. and uninstalled Window Washer, and that freed up about 25% of the system resources... typically I would have aobut 28% after normal startup.. now I have about 60%. One thing that happens is that many programs do not free up all of the resources used when you close them so if you open, then close, then open again later and close, etc, each time you will have fewer resources. When you discover programs like this, you are better off to leave them running in the background if you use them often rather than open and close. I do understand that Internet Explorer was not giving you the error but this article also mentions an invalid page fault in Explorer which may be caused by incorrect version or corrupt file or files that are checked by the Internet Explorer repair tool. I opened the windows explorer, copied a couple of files, then when I closed it I got the same error as before, with nothing else open... so obviously (to me at least) something is corrupt in the windows explorer, but how do I fix it? I installed another program (previous to this check) called Total Commander, and found I could use it to open files, transfer files, use just like I would windows explorer and it worked just fine without crashing. Now EVERY time I close windows explorer it freezes up the machine, I seldom get an error message, but it always freezes now requiring a hard restart. I also noticed lots of duplicate entries in the startup tab of the msconfig program, how do I get rid ot the duplicate entries? Even though unchecked they are still there.. ???
