weird characters shown up instead of original symbols

Something happened that the menu & screen symbols become strange characters
in my Win98 SE system.

Is there anyway to check why the font files in the FONT folder are not
used/accessed properly ?  I'd checked that marlett.ttf and other ones are
the same as before i.e. not corrupted.  In fact, I'd replaced them with
the old ones saved before.  Pls. advise.  Thx.

I believe that you're on the right track in checking out marlett.ttf.  Make
sure that you set the attributes on it as described in this article.
