XP Home or Pro? Enable Simple file sharing should do the trick and be more
simple than anything else I can think of off the top of my head. What's
going on and maybe we can debug it for you?

XP questions are best asked in an XP newsgroup.
You will need to ensure that the logon name and password for the W98 machine
exactly matches a user account (name and password) that you have created for
XP, and that the user has the correct access privileges for the XP share you
are connecting to..

You can enable the Guest account in XP and that will allow the share. Not
as secure, but if you have a good network, you should be okay. Otherwise,
you have to have an identical user name on the 98 machine that matches the
XP user account.
