A relative downloaded some type of virus on the PC that would not let
Explorer operate. Therefore I could not run control panel, open up my
computer, etc. That person then deleted some files that they believed were
the cause, and did this by the date of the corruption. Unfortunately once
this was done Windows would not boot up again. First it said run Scanreg
from DOS mode, but it could not fix the problem and I was told the SYSTEM.INI
file was missing. I was finally able to restore this, but then found that
the WIN.INI file was also missing. The computer then said that "VMM32.VXD is
required to run Windows. If this file is not in your PATH, you may need to
reinstall Windows." I simply want to know how to reinstall windows from the
DOS prompt without deleting all my files that are still on the PC. Also I do
not believe that my cd drive is being acknowledged. I tried to change
directories to the D and E drive and got invalid, how can I make the CD drive
be acknowledged. Please help!!!

Get a boot disk from www.bootdisk.com
Then boot it (you may have to change the boot order in bios)
Note the CD drive letter during boot.
Then at the A: > prompt type
<CDROM drive letter:>\win98\setup
Make sure you install win98 on the same drive and folder as the past
installation

The only problem with this is that it is a laptop and last year right before
the warranty ran out they repaired the A drive. Now the A drive isn't
working anymore. This is the reason I was trying to see how to get the CD
drive to work. I'm sure I will have to go into the BIOS and command it to
boot from CD but I can't find the command to do so (get into the BIOS). Its
a Toshiba Satellite Laptop purchased around 1999/2000. Just being lazy is
the reason I never transferred my files off of there.

Watch the boot screen and press the key indicated to enter setup (BIOS).
Once there, there are instructions for navigating through the screens. Look
for a boot section and change the CDRom drive to be the first boot device.
Exit and save settings.
