Program closing problem

I have an intermittant problem under WIN98SE that SEEMS to be due to
programs not closing completely (I'm not sure, though).  When it
happens, it is most often my Mozilla 1.5 browser... but it has happened
with other programs.

What happens is; I'll go to open a program from a shortcut on the
desktop by double clicking it, but instead of opening the program, I'll
get a dialogue box with a number of choices... OPEN is at the top.  If
I'm opening Windows Explorer, for example, each folder I click on will
open the dialog box.

I've found that I can fix the problem, temporarily, by right clicking on
the bar at the bottom of the desktop, choose PROPERTIES, and then exit.
All is then OK for a while until it starts happening again.  A
nuisance, but not critical problem.

Any ideas what's doing this (hope I've described it adequately) and how
I can fix it?

Rich,

If you have TweakUI, try repairing associations under the Repair
tab.

TweakUI 1.33:

After installing find it in the Control Panel.

Bill,
I tried your suggestion, and in the two days since I've implemented the
fix, I haven't seen the phenomena again.  I've held off replying until
some time has gone by, but it DOES seem to have fixed the problem.

Now, I've go no idea WHAT was happening to cause the problem, nor WHY
associations have anything to do with it, but

I appreciate the help!

I don't know WHAT happens to cause it but it happens enough that
TweakUI has a Repair Associations along with other repairs. As to
the WHY,  I suspected it because when you selected a file you got
the menu options which is typical with a file with no association.
As I understand it the repair options in TweakUI are done in the
Registry, so something happened in there.

Glad you are apparently squared away and thanks for reporting the
result.

I snipped quite a bit, here, but the bottom line is that my problem is
still with me.  Seemed to go away for a couple of days, but it
reappeared yesterday, I'm sorry to report.

Any other ideas, Bill, (or anybody)?

Did you try to right click any place of the Desktop, and then hit ESC
key?

It seems as Windows does not see sometimes, when right mouse button is
released.
