Missing files

I went to try connecting to a network and found that, according to
Microsoft's own list, quite a few files are missing from my W98SE CD.
Yes, it's a Microsoft disk with the product key and all.

Any suggestions what I can do about this?

What are the files that are missing?

Well, I've bumped into it repeatedly over time and there are several
related to networking, but I've never made a list.

Can you think of a way to compare the CD with the MS list to get a list
of what's missing quickly?

It won't be quick but you can get a list from MS from the Knowledge
Base.  Use this exact search string on Title and your will see the 14
listings.

Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM Directory Listing

It would be quick if you supplied at least one name of the files that
are supposedly missing and the method you are using to find the files
inside the .cab files on the CD.

I just ran across one this afternoon: secur32.dll.

I know nothing about .cab files.  The missing files I refer to are files
that one operation or another required.  A window pops up saying to put
in the W98 CD.  When I click it to continue it says it can't find the
file it is looking for.

However these .cab files are handled, I'd think the OS itself ought to
know how to look on the CD for them.  Anyway it has told me it couldn't
find the (whatever) file many times.  AS for the MS list, I happened
across it and remembered 2 files the system couldn't find on the CD.
They were on the list.

Now, if there is some puzzle I simply don't know about (which would be
just about anything to do with W98), as I said, I'm a novice.

Thanks

The OS needs a little help from you, I am afraid.
If you don't look inside the .cab archives , then you cannot see the
files.
Secur32.dll is in NET7.CAB
Open that cab file to see. (Double-click it)

If you want to know what cab file a particular file is in you can look
at the KB listings I pointed you to or use Start-Find-Files and search
*.cab in the CD for the name of the file you want using the
"Containing Text" method.

A better alternative is to use SFC as you do not need to know which
cab file to use.
Start-Run-SFC and extract a single file.

Thanks for pointing me to this.  But I have to tell you, if this thing
is going to keep wanting more files from the CD, it's damn stupid if it
can't even see those files.

Open the .cab archives if you think you need to see the files.

That's just it.  I _don't_ want to see them.  When the system says to
insert the installation CD so it can get some files I expect _it_ to see
and get them.  Why does it ask you to insert the CD if it's blind to it?
If it's an exercise in futility?

Thanks
