My computer was working fine up until last week.
Windows 98 will no longer boot up on my computer.

If I try to boot up normally or in safe mode, I receive the following
message: Data error reading drive C

Also, I cannot boot up from the CD ROM.

When running Scandisk in Dos I get the following message:
Scandisk encountered a date arror while readiing cluster 11173.
Scandisk will try to continue past this error. When Scandisk offer to
perform a surface scan on this drive, choose Yes.

My computer then freezes and goes no further and I am not able to do a
surface scan.

Can this problem be fixed without reformatting my hard drive?
Will reformatting my drive fix this problem or is it time for a new hard
drive?

Any input would be apreciated.

Thanks,
Martin.

(This may be normal, depending on your CD)

The Data Error and ScanDisk error messages
indicate your C: drive is dying or dead i.e. you
need to replace it.

Your best solution is to buy a new hard drive
and instal it as C:, instal Win98 OS, and then
try to copy from the old drive (now D:) to the
new C: drive.  You should run the drive manufacturer's
diagnostics for a clue whether you can reformat
and repair the old hard drive, or just scrap it.

Go to the hard drive manufacturer's web site and download their diagnostic
software.  This will run from a floppy disk and tell you the health of your
hard drive.  If it is dead, then Don's recommended action is what I would do
also.  If the diagnostics says the drive is shot, you probably will not be
able to reload the system and may jeopardize the data in the process.
