I need to re-install win98_se on a friend's computer. He has lost his
original w98 cd though.
I went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
and recorded his Product Id and Product Key.
I am planning to use my win98 cd to re-install on his computer. So here is
the question - can I do that and then change the product ID and Key once the
install is complete so that his system shows his original key and Id? Or is
it more complicated than that, and is there something else I need to do or
somewhere else in the registry I need to make changes as well?

Assuming the installation he has is the same version as the one you have
then just use your CD and his product key for installation.
If you both have a retail upgrade version then you will need proof of a
qualifying product to initialize the install (A win95 CD or a set of win3.1
disks will do)

Product keys vary based on the type of CD that is being used. If you have
an OEM CD and his key is from a retail version, his key will not work. As
far as I know, the key is only used to satisfy the installation routine so
should you have to use your key, go to the registry afterwards and change it
to his.
