I've just finshed a new installation on a formatted HDD, on 1st boot the
setup returns to the hardware configuration screen and hangs on the PnP
configuration with the following error, 0E eception at address 0028:C0008997
VxD ---

PC also hangs on booting into safe mode

I've googled the error to no avail, tried several reinstalls with hardware
removed, modem, soundcard, DVD stc, nothing!!

Scanreg & Scandisk report no problems

Unusually, the 3 RAM slots have 256mb, 128mb and 64mb RAM inserted!!!???

Previously ran Win98SE without any problems until the recent installation of
a DVDR drive, boot up slowed to a crawl 4mins +, this drive has been removed
in an attempt to get machine up and running

I'm stumped at this stage, considering resetting CMOS and trying a reinstall

Any help would be appreciated

The error message doesn't say anything after VXD?

Try removing all but one stick of RAM (in the first slot) and try again.
Assuming you get past the problem, you can reinstall the RAM, one stick at a
time.

You might also try changing the Plug and Play OS setting in the
BIOS. Either enable or disable it. Your BIOS may not be registered
in the Machine.inf file and could cause some confusion. If no help
restore the setting.
