installing 98se

I installed 98 and 98SE on my kids PC, everything OK it seems but screen
image is very grainy, too large for screen and I can't adjust it either
under settings.

If my memory serves me correct, I have to install a driver but can't
remember which one in the device mgr.

Which component in device mgr should I look for to install a driver with?

Display drivers. Install a driver for the video.

If you mean that the display is extending beyond the edges of the monitor,
and you can't get access to screen components such as the close button of a
maximised windows, and you can't bring the whole desktop into view by
adjusting the height and width controls, then that's a fault with the
monitor, and you won't fix it by installing drivers.

If you mean that the screen components (such as icons and menu bars) seem
too large and you can't fit enough objects onto the display, then
right-click in a blank part of the desktop, choose Properties then Settings
and select a larger screen area. A larger area means smaller objects, and
more of them.

If you can't select a larger area (such as 800x600 instead of 640x480) then
you may not have installed the correct driver for your video display
adapter. Find out the make and model of your display adapter card and
search out the proper drivers for it, either on the CD that came with the
system, a CD that came with the card (if you purchased it as an upgrade) or
from the video adapter card manufacturer's www site.

tks Jeff, if I installed wrong driver for it, how do I uninstall it and
then put new one in?

Just install the new one. Usually no need to "uninstall" the previous drivers,
but we often first change drivers to "Standard VGA" then reboot before trying to
install new drivers.

To make sure what drivers you should be using, I suggest you download Everest
Home Edition from www.lavalys.com. It will positively identify your hardware
without depending upon Windows to describe them, since Windows is often wrong.
