I've got a Toshiba Libretto 100CT laptop (love those sub-notebooks :) ), it's
in it's original state exept for the harddrive, i've put a 40GB replacement
in.
I haven't got a floppy or a CD-romdrive with it, so to install windows i put
the harddrive in a other laptop, formattet the drive there (fat16) /S and put
the installation folder of Win98SE on the harddrive.
When i replaced the harddrive in the libretto and start the setup,
everything still goes as planned...
But then the setup hangs on the first restart... I've tried the same thing
with windows 2000, but that doesn't appear to make a differance.
It's quite impossible to get the setup going again, i've pretty much tried
all the options in the bios etcetera. I've allso tried to fully install
Win98SE on the harddrive in the other laptop, and then put it back in the
Libretto... Nothing changes.
I've tried to install the correct video drivers while the HD is in the other
laptop and then place it back... No effect.
I'm getting quite desprate, the laptop used to have windows 2000 and two
versions of linux on it, so i know it's possible.
What is going wrong?

In addition to the \win98 folder from the setup CD, also download all
drivers for this computer from Toshiba and read anything that the
manufacturer has to say about installing Win98SE on this computer. They
should be well aware of any quirks or special procedures required in order
to get a successful installation.
I have yet to see a laptop that did not have proprietary hardware that
required drivers from the computer manufacturer (not included on the Win98
CD) and having them available on the hard drive will allow you to install
these drivers. You will want to extract the files or unzip them so that the
Windows installer will be able to find them if they do not have a setup.exe
to install the drivers.
It could also be that your video adapter is not identified correctly and the
wrong driver has been installed. This article will help you through the
resolution for that problem (but of course, you need to have the correct
driver on the hard drive in order to install it). In the meantime, you
should be able to run in ugly mode (VGA).

I've tried to run the setup with all the drivers, but it won't matter...
I get a blinking stripe on the topleft of my screen after the first restart
during setup.
How can i get into VGA-mode? I can't start anything, as soon as i power up
the computer it freezes.
Please help... (getting desperate, strapping the computer with semtex wile
foam is squirting from my mouth...)

Press the CTRL key as you are booting and choose Safe mode from the Startup
menu.
Step by step instructions are under "Video Adapter Driver Conflict" in the
article that I referred you to (see below).

Yes, i got that, it's just that holding the CTRL key doesn't do anything.
The computer freezes right after it shows the bios picture.

If you are not even getting to the boot menu, then it sounds like a hardware
issue. Double check the connections, make sure the BIOS is recognizing the
drive correctly, etc. The video adapter conflict would not apply at the
point you are at during the boot process.

The laptop's BIOS may not be able to handle a disk that large. Most hard
drive manufacturers have installation software available for download. You
will probably have to install the overlay on the laptop with the floppy.

Ah, thanks for the lead, but it doesn't do it.
I've installed the overlay software, but the laptop still reacts the same.
It now shows the overlay software and then it hangs showing a blinking
horizontal stripe...

You may have to repartition and reformat with the drive overlay
in place. I suggest you make sure the drive can boot to a DOS
prompt before putting it back into the problem computer.
Please note that a drive overlay typically changes the way you
boot from a floppy, usually requiring you to press a key during
bootup to pause the process while you insert the floppy. Be
sure to allow "Large disk support" if you repartition the drive.
