CD ROM drive failed during WIN98 install. Replaced CD drive and tried
again. Ran FDISK again and I must have messed up somewhere. Now when I try
to install 98 I get a message like this:
Windows 98 has detected that drive C: does not contain a valid fat or fat32
partition. There are several possible causes
1. The drive may need to be partitioned. To create a partition run FDISK.
2- You may be using third party disk-part software. If you atre using this
type software, remove emergency boot disk and restart computer following
instructions on the
I have rebooted and run FDISK and still get the same thing. Makes no
changes at all.
Any advice will be appreciated.

Repost telling what FDISK reports about your C: drive.
It should be made (by FDISK) a Primary DOS partition.
After creating any partition, you must FORMAT it. (You
did not mention this.) From a DOS boot the command is
FORMAT C: /S

FDISK reports:

1. Boot DOS and run FDISK on the hard drive (or first
hard drive if two are fitted.)
2. Remove all or any partitions
3. Create a new partition of type Primary DOS
(selecting Y = Yes for large drives).
4. Reboot DOS and
A:FORMAT C: /S
If either FDISK or (after the preceding steps) FORMAT
will not run, the hard drive is either improperly connected
or irreparable.

Sounds like it isn't recognizing you have partitions. Try repartitioning
with FDISK. Make sure you select large HD support (enter 'Y') if asked at
FDISK startup to get FAT32. Then execute the command
FDISK /mbr
to rewrite the Master Boot Record. This KB article explains more:

Tried it again and this time at the A: prompt I typed C:-
At C: I typed FDISK /mbr Then I get "no fixed disk installed"
What does that mean? What should I do now?
Thanks in advance

Open the case and unplug and reseat the cables that connect the hard drive
to the motherboard. Then try Fdisk again.
