Loss of system fonts

I recently used drag-n-drop to add about twenty new fonts to my Win98 fonts
folder; I then installed the fonts from the dialog.  Now, however, though I
didn't overwrite any previously-existing fonts that I'm aware of, the left
pane of the "help" dialog has, instead of letters, only squares for each
alphabetic character (numbers don't seem to have been affected); similarly,
when I print font descriptions from the Fonts folder, the fonts themselves
turn out fine, but the descriptions at the very beginning print out with
those same squares (though it displays on the monitor correctly).  I'm using
98SE on an older computer, and because it's older I don't dare upgrade to
XP.  The affected font must be a system font of some type.  Interestingly,
though, when I print from within MS Word, everything works there.  Any
hints?

Additional notes:  I don't connect this computer to the internet at all, and
the XP machine where I got the fonts is running anti-virus software
constantly.  I did a scan of the "source" computer, and nothing shows up as
being out-of-whack.  I had used the 98SE computer earlier in the morning
with no problem, but only after the installation of fonts did it change.
The total number of fonts on that machine is about 250

Try right clicking the Fonts folder, get properties and make sure it
has the System attribute. If the attribute is already checked but
ghosted it's ok.

This type of display error often indicates something
wrong with the MARLETT font.  / start / run / SFC.EXE
(System File Checker)
set to restore from the source just one file
c:\windows\fonts\MARLETT.TTF

The Marlett.ttf font is used for the min, max and close symbols in
the upper right corner of windows. It the font was missing or
corrupt those symbols would be messed up. Maybe they are and Fred
hasn't noticed it yet. Wouldn't hurt anything to replace the font
though.

Thanks for the hints so far.  I'll give them a try, and see if things
change!

Just a follow-up for others who might be reading this:

I finally got the fonts back where they belong.

First, I exported then deleted the Font registry key from Local
Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows
Next, I inserted the 98SE update disk, and from the command prompt did an
extract of the *.ttf and *.fon files, as well as the original System.ini
file,  into a temporary folder.
Then I used attrib -s fonts to remove the original fonts as system files;
renamed the fonts to "oldfonts", and renamed the temporary file as fonts,
then re-set the +s attrib.  Also had to unhide ttfcache and delete it.
Rebooted, opened the fonts folder, and closed it.  It all looked like it was
going to work great, and did until a restart, when everything in the fonts
folder disappeared from windows, though it was still available from the DOS
command prompts.  Repeated the whole process a couple of times, then decided
to try an experiment:

I installed one font ttf file from another source; immediately, all the
fonts became visible; on restart, everything worked great!

Thanks to everyone in this UG for their comments and assistance.
