I have a laptop that I want to partition with partition-magic.  I want to
install Win 98 on the new partition.  The problem is, the laptop has a usb
cd-rom that I can't seem to get to work with any kind of boot disk.  Can my
Win 98 cd-rom be broken into pieces(not literally) and put onto floppy and
booted from the floppys??

thanks in advance

IKE,

The Win 98 folder on the CD is about 125 MB. It would take a huge
number of floppy's.

Not sure if Windows is working on the Laptop and you want to format
then install Windows from DOS. If it is not then disregard the rest
of this.

There are USB drivers at www.bootdisk.com  for floppies

If Windows is working on the Laptop you can try Direct Cable
Connection and transfer the Win98 folder on the CD to the Laptop's
HD. Then run Setup from the HD. You first copy the folder to your PC
then transfer it via DCC.

I did this with a Laptop that had a bad CDrom. With PM create a 2 MB
partition on the Laptop then copy the Win98 folder to the 2MB
partition and keep it there. Any time Windows needs something from
the CD it will go there instead. You can also transfer programs from
CD's this way, then install them.

First copy the Win98 folder on the CD to the PC.
Then setup DCC on both machines.
Then transfer the Win 98 folder over to the Laptop with DCC.
Then create the 2MB partition with PM.
Then copy the Win98 folder to the 2MB partition
Then run Setup from the Win98 folder on the 2MB partition.
Then delete the other Win98 folder if you need the room

You won't need the CD again.

Make that a 200MB partition instead of a 2MB.  :-(

With PM create a 200 MB partition on the Laptop then copy the Win98
folder on the CD to the 200 MB partition and keep it there.

What is running on the machine at the moment?  Can you get access to the CD?
One of the major features of Partition Magic is that you can preserve the
contents of the drive while you re-partition.  Why not copy the CD to the
drive before repartitioning?  Then just boot from floppy and run setup off
the hard drive.

I currently have Win XP Pro on the machine.  The machine has a on board
floppy and a usb cd-rom.  I havn't had any luck with getting the usb cd-rom
to work using a boot disk.  I want to create a partition using Partition
Magic and put Win 98 on the new partition but without access to the cd-rom I
have run into a dead end.

Any suggestions???

USB requires Windows (so far as I know) i.e.
there are no DOS drivers for USB hardware.
So I do not see how you expect to "get the usb cd-rom
to work using a boot disk."

If the laptop boots OK and loads WinXP OK the
USB CD ROM drive can be tested to see if it
works OK.

Assuming so, you must presumably instal
Partition Magic under WinXP with the aim of
freeing space to FDISK a new Win98 drive.  As you
know, the WinXP partition must be NTFS and
the Win98 partition must be FAT format.  I do
not know if PM enables this.

OK Here's the deal.
I have Win XP Pro with one partition with NTFS.  I am able to create a
second partition with FAT.  I want to create a duel boot system.  All of this
can be done with Partition Magic.  The problem is, when I create the new
partition and then boot to it, nothing happens because it doesn't have an OS
yet.  I want to put Win 98 on the new partition but can't because my cd-rom
is USB and I havn't been able to find/create a boot disk that can see my USB
cd-rom.

If it's possible to boot to a CD drive on the USB then it will be enabled
through an option in BIOS setup, not by booting from floppy.

My comment still stands - if the CD-ROM works from XP, then use XP to copy
the CD to the hard drive before doing the repartitioning.  Repartition using
Partition Magic so the contents of the drive are preserved.  Then install
Windows.

If I copy the contents on the cd to the hard drive using XP, then after I
partition the hard drive, the cd copy will be on the NTFS(XP) partition.  How
do I then install Win98 from the XP partition to the newly formed
partition(FAT32)??????

I do not see this.  Why not:
1.  Install Partition Magic on the XP drive.
2.  Using PM, create a new drive, min. 2 Gb,
call it drive X.
3.  Format drive X for FAT (not NTFS).
4.  Copy from the CD drive to drive X  the Win98 instal CD
SETUP.EXE and the whole of the /Win98 and /drivers folders.

You now have on the hard drive all you need to instal
Win98 as dual boot -- but must first . . .
5.  Choose your dual boot software (because this
probably governs how you should instal Win98 onto
drive X.  E.g. you may need to alter your Win98
boot floppy.)

Use PM to create two fat 32 partitions.  Make one just large enough to hold
the contents of the W98 CD.  Copy the files to that partition.  Use PM to
hide the NTFS partition.  Install W98 to the second fat 32 partition using
the files on the hard drive.
