What's missing when the system loses its desktop icon layout between
boots.

Is that the only thing missing (i.e., does the computer otherwise work
properly)?  Does this happen on occasion and then the next boot, all is
well?  Or, are the desktop items missing and the computer does not work
properly?  Or, (after reading your post again) is it the layout of the icons
that is messed up?

Whew!  It came on suddenly.  Apparently after I did a software remove
(off of the Control Panel) of the Intel Pro/100 software for my PCMCIA
combo card, hopefully in preparation for starting the Intel Pro/100
installation over from scratch.  Since then - or since about then - the
desktop comes up with all the icons jammed in the upper left.  I have
the utility to put them back where they were before shut down, but it
still doesn't stick between boots.

It looks as if the software remove operation removed something besides
the Intel software.

Also several attempts to re-install the Intel software (drivers, etc.)
have been totally with any results I can see.  Neither "Device Manager"
nor "Network" show anything comming up.  "Modem" gives mixed messages,
but certainly doesn't function.

Since then I have tried Windows Setup - first comm, then in its
entirety.  No change.

The cache may be corrupt. Delete the ShellIconCache file in the
Windows folder and reboot from Start > Shutdown, not a shortcut. The
cache will be rebuilt.

If no help your icon cache may be too small, try this:
You can expand the Cache this way. You can expand it in the
Registry. The Max Cached Icons value data range is between 100 and
4096. The default value is 500. I use 4096 and it works well.

Copy the lines between the lines starting with REGEDIT4 and include
the one blank line at the end. Paste into a Notepad maximized
window and save as Maxicons.reg. Double click it to merge it into
the Registry. Reboot.
You can edit it and change 4096 and run it anytime if you wish.
Some use 8000.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer]
"Max Cached Icons"="4096"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If needed and if you have TweakUI look under the Repair tab and
repair icons.

Let us know.

I think you are speaking to the desktop icons problem.  Last night I ran
Registry First Aid about 17 dozen times.  (On the first run it said
there were 93 invalid paths?  In only one day since the last run?)
Eventually the icons started showing up where they belong.

Still no progress on the Intel hardware stuff, but I'd hate to put
anyone into a paroxism so I'll not talk about that, because there's a
possibility it may not be related to what I've already said.  I remember
now why I had disabled this newsgroup for months and will do it again
immediately.  Nice people you have here.

Hi Jim,

You do not provide enough details about your problems.  We have to figure
out what's wrong based on your description and saying that something is not
right does not provide adequate info.  Also, it is better to list your
different problems in different posts unless you believe the problems to be
related.   Tips on posting are located here:

1.  I said considerably more than that.

2.  I said all I know to say without specific questions to answer.

I believe the problems to be  related.
