Rick,
More specific details please. Exactly what has occurred in the
reinstallation process when the problem occurs? Have all the files copied,
is it detecting hardware, etc.? With the info you've currently provided, I
would suggest that you remove or disable all cards and devices except for
the hard drive, display adapter and CDRom drive. Then give it another shot
and see if the installation will complete.
By the way, did you flash the BIOS when the PC was still working or did you
do it and then format the drive?

Ron the system hangs up suddenly just seconds after I click continue in the
first sreen that appears in Windows98 setup. It hangs before it can copy the
files and way before it has detected any hardware. It is the first sreen that
says 15-60 minutes to go until Windows loads. I have an 8MB PCI video card
installed, and a PCI internal modem card, those are the only cards in this
system. I will pull the video card and see if the OS loads. I flashed the
BIOS with Mr. BIOS from a download when the system was functioning properly.
It worked fine and when the system boots if I hit escape I can get into setup
which I have done several times. The Mr. BIOS now "sees" my Maxtor 30GB HD
and my Fujitsu 2GB D: drive. But I needed to reformat and partition the drive
in order to use all of the capacity. I have done that but now when I try to
reinstall 98 it hangs up. Thanks

Ron, one other thing, it does copy some files and checks the registry. Then
when it goes to the screen where the setup wizard takes over it freezes up
after 11% when I click continue. I put in an older ISA video card and that
did not fix it, still hangs at 11% into the install? I hope this gives you a
better idea? If not let me know and I will try to provide more info. Thanks
much

I think Bill's recommendation is the logical step to take.

I agree with Bill too. Better to copy the Win98 directory to the C: drive
and install from the HD. However, check your CD for any smudges and
scratches. This is often a problem as these CDs are very old and many do
not notice or check.

Rick,
This MS Article may help you find out what Setup is trying to do
when it hangs.
Description of Windows 98 Setup Process. (Q195568)
http://tinyurl.com/d2rbz
If it turns out to be when it is extracting and copying files from
the CD try copying the Win98 folder on the CD to your HDD and run
Setup from there from Dos, this often eliminates some problems. Be
sure to install into the Windows folder if it tries to install into
a different one.
From the C:\ prompt enter:
MD C:\Win98
Copy D:\Win98\*.* C:\Win98
Where D: is your CDrom drive.
Then run Setup from the Win98 folder and you won't need your
CDrom. Whenever Windows needs something from the CD it will go there
instead.

Bill,
Can you tell me again the DOS commands in order to load the Win98 folder
directly'
to the HD? I tried it and kept getting the error bad command or file name? I
have not
used DOS in awhile and my DOS 6.22 book does not have instructions on how to
load From the CD right to the hard drive. When I typed MD C:\Win98 it came
back with the directory already exists? So then I entered CD Win98, it went
to it but when I tried the Copy E:\Win98\*.* C:\Win98 it said to many
parameters? What am I doing wrong? Help! Thanks
Rick

Is there anything in the Win98 folder when you enter
Dir C:\win98 /p?
If it contains dozens of CAB files that means the folder on the CD
has already been copied. If it includes Setup.exe then run it to
install Windows.
If the folder contains misc. files then install into a Win98cd
folder instead:
Boot with a Win98 startup diskette with CDrom support.
Enter C:
From the C:\ prompt enter:
MD C:\Win98cd
Copy E:\Win98\*.* C:\Win98cd
Where E: is your CDrom drive.
Then run Setup from the Win98cd folder and you won't need your
CDrom.
Let us know.

That should be COPY into a Win98cd folder instead. Install into
C:\Windows.
