Rcently while my XP machine was being repaired I hooked my old 98se machine
up to the LCD monitor for the XP. Now that I've gone back to the original crt
monitor for the 98SE machine, it shows the normal start up proceedings but
when it gets to loading windows itself, it must be looking for the LCD screen
because the screen goes blank. It continues to load but no screen.

I've started in safe mode where the crt screen works, and looked for the lcd
monitor to disable it but I can't see it.

How do I fix this?

Thanks.

Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Display Adapters
Remove ALL Monitors
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the required drivers -
hopefully curing your problem.

You have set your display resolution to settings that the glass monitor
cannot handle.  This can be fixed as follows:

Boot into Safe Mode by either hitting F8 or by holding down the Ctrl key
after memory and drives are checked but before Windows starts up.  Enter the
Display Properties screen either from the Control Panel or by right-clicking
an empty part of the desktop and selecting Properties.  On the Settings tab,
set the display to 640x480, 256 colors.  You'll be warned that these
settings will be applied when you reboot - that's fine, that's what we want.
Restart the system and you should have a display visible, then you can
select the desired resolution and refresh rate slowly and carefully, one
step at a time.
