I had windows 98 on my work computer when I got hired, and found a windows
2000 disc in my office.  i tried to install it and then realized that I
needed a cd key code number, which was not with this disc.  I then asked for
help, and a friend un-installed the windows 2000 thing, at least i think he
did, but i no longer have windows 98 on my computer either, so now I have no
access to word documents.  How can I restore windows 98 onto my computer so I
can get some work done!!!

Find someone who knows what they're doing to figure it out. We have no way
of knowing how far the 2K install got, whether or not what's left is just a
98 system in need of a few tweaks or if a full reinstall using proper CDs is
needed. It's very possibly a simple task, albeit not something a newbie
wants to get into.

I have other suggestions, but I really don't think you're up to the task. A
short description of one: Shrink the existing partition(s) and install
Windows 98 to a new partition from whence you can retrieve and work on your
files. Yes, it's involved, but it's least likely to destroy your personal
data.

Please repost with more information, including what happens when you start the
computer and any information about what your friend did.

my computer turns on normal and runs okay.  My internet works fine, although
the problem I have is when I try to open any MS Word documents, they now go
to the "open with" option, with windows not being an option.  I have no clue
what is wrong with this thing.  All I know that my friend did was he said he
un-installed the word 2000 stuff, but now I can't find anything that says
windows 98, so it must have been un-installed too.

You repeatedly interchange "Word 2000" and "Windows 2000" in your replies.  Which
did you try to install unsuccessfully....Word 2000 or Windows 2000?

From your description, it sounds like you tried to install Word 2000, not Windows.

Ideally, you should reinstall MS Word.  If this is impractical, restart the
computer, tap the F8 key repeatedly until the startup menu appears and
select "Command Prompt".  Then type "scanreg  /restore" and select a
registry backup that predates the problem.

ben, i tried the scanreg /restore thing but it didn't give me a long enough
time period back, although, i appreciate you helping me with that idea.  I'm
not sure if there is anyway to open up that time period or not, but I'm
willing to give something a shot.

and as for what I was trying to install, the disc says MS WorksSuite 2001,
which I think has windows 2000 on it.  I'm not sure, I can navigate the
internet, print a picture, use email, type on word, but other than that, I'm
a novice.

Double-click a .doc file and see if MS Word is in the application list.  If it
is, highlight it, make sure that "Always use this program..." is checked and
click "OK".  If it isn't on the list, click "Other" and browse to the MS Word
executable.  On my system it is "c:\msoffice\winword\winword.exe".   If
you can't find it, click "Start", "Find", "Files or folders", type "winword.exe"
in the "Named" box and click "Find Now".
