I have been trying to install win 98 se  as an update from just 98 and when
i do after installing and rebooting when it get s to the updating
configuration settings it hangs.
The icon is still animated but there is no progress on the timer or the
graph. It stayed in one spot for over an hour. should it take that long to
update the settings or how could I make it work faster .

Try starting the computer in Safe mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly
during bootup.  Also, if the upgrade was on a CD, you might try repeating
it by creating a boot floppy with CD drivers.

If the computer will start in Safe mode and the upgrade file or files
are on the hard drive, start the computer in Safe mode and try
running the upgrade again.  If that doesn't work go to "Control
Panel", "Add/Remove Programs" and see if the upgrade can be
uninstalled.  If computer won't start in Safe mode, you might be
able to recover the previous system by starting in "Command
Prompt", typing "scanreg  /restore" and restoring a previous
registry.

I was able to recover the previous system in safe mode but how do I get the
update to be accepted without freezing again?

Try installing the update in Safe mode.  Also, to free up disk space,
click "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "Internet Options" and in the
"Temporary Internet files" box, click "Delete files".

I tried installing in safe mode and it said that ido not have enough memory
to install from safe mode and to try in regular mode.
as for cleaning the temp folder I have Ie configured to empty them on
shutdown.
I also use disk cleaner which empties and removes cookies as well as history

Try running the update in regular mode.  I suggest you close all programs
except the update itself.  Also, you probably should temporarily disable
any antivirus or firewall on the computer.
