jseesengood - 23 Feb 2006 22:42 GMT Whenever I boot my computer, a window appears that reads "RTLDI.EXE will terminate." What is this ? Where did it come from ? How do I get rid of it ?

Ron Badour - 23 Feb 2006 23:45 GMT I found a few references about this file but only one was in English and it was dated over five years ago. So, while I don't know what rtldi.exe is, I doubt that it is a virus or adware. How long has the notice been appearing and what did you do (add hardware, software, etc.) to the computer immediately prior to its appearance? You might want to check the contents of your autoexec.bat or config.sys files and see if either contains a reference to the file and, if so, rem out the reference. You can also see if you can pin point it using this method:

Truth be known, I am actually computer illiterate, and I'm not sure I even searched those sites correctly. This started after I did a complete system recovery, and it's not the only problem I've had. I cannot find the drivers for the ethernet adapter or the PCI controller. I've done recoveries before, and I used the same discs this time that I've always used, but I've never had these problems before. When I try to load the drivers I am prompted to "Insert Windows Second Edition CD-ROM". I do not have this disc, and I have never had it. I am truly (see my sig.)

Ron Badour - 24 Feb 2006 18:46 GMT What kind of computer and what CDs do you have? Are there .cab files on the hard drive that have the needed files? To determine this, do a search on: win98_29.cab and if found, note the location. Then any time a file is needed, point it to that location.
To open the autoexec.bat file, right click and select edit. To open the config.sys file, right click, select open with and use Notepad.
Finally, if that message causes no harm, you may just want to ignore it as some times it is very difficult to track down these oddities.

I am truly (see my sig.) jseesengood - 24 Feb 2006 23:59 GMT Thanks, Ron. I checked both files and didn't find it. I did, however, find the files needed for the Eternet Adapter. I still can't find drivers for the PCI Controller. I'm not exactly sure where to look, since I don't know what a PCI Controller is. I have a HP Brio Ba210. I bought it second (at least) hand. My discs are homemade, I'm really not sure what's on them, but they've always worked before.

Jeff Richards - 25 Feb 2006 20:35 GMT The PCI controller is a motherboard component, so the driver would be part of the motherboard drivers. However HP doesn't include separate motherboard drivers with that model, so the default Windows drivers must be suitable, unless HP has updated the installation CD but hasn't supplied all the updates.

Then choose Download drivers and software, Windows 98.

jseesengood - 02 Mar 2006 01:47 GMT Thanks, everyone, for all your help. I have all of my drivers now, and everything seems to be O.K.. I still have the aggravating RTLDI message, but I guess I can live with it. I'll probably stumble onto the answer by accident one of these days. Once again, thanks to all.

If so, make a note of the content of the line, and post back with the detail - and we can then see what we can find

Once again, thanks to all. jseesengood - 03 Mar 2006 03:24 GMT I've been through MSCONFIG from top to bottom and I can't find any mention of RTLDI. ALL I can find out is that it is a Direct Runtime Loader from BitWagon Software. When It pops up on my computer, the complete message reads "Interface Failure - Failed to register with Service Provider. RTLDI.exe will terminate". It's all Greek to me.

Noel Paton - 03 Mar 2006 10:30 GMT Hmmm - this looks almost as if you have a program which is intended for Windows XP (or NT/2000) installed. Using FileMon or Process Explorer (www.sysinternals.com) and looking through the reports may give a better handle on what it's looking for, and what's launching it.
AHah!! - found it?? (maybe) - http://www.bitwagon.com/rtldi/rtldi.html - looks as if it's a Linux program that someone is trying to persuade to run in Windows!! This could be a simple programming or installation error - or an attempt to run malicious software in the background. I would definitely use Process Explorer to see if you can determine what is launching this, and then uninstall the offending software, or otherwise modify its behaviour (assuming that you still wish to keep it)

Once again, thanks to all. jseesengood - 05 Mar 2006 23:57 GMT I downloaded www.sysinternals.com and ran Process Engineer. I may as well have been performing brain surgery ---- on myself, but I didn't see any reference to RTLDI. But thanks, Noel, for your time.

Kydd - 14 Mar 2006 15:40 GMT Using MSCONFIG, check out the Startup tab and look for C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\En1207d.exe and disable it. It happened to me since my PCI Ethernet card is missing a driver (yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager). I tried to use the driver from the HP web site and I started getting this error on startup as well. I can't seem to locate the proper driver for this OASIS O3V-0 card!!!
jseesengood - 16 Mar 2006 01:40 GMT That seemed to do the trick. It probably happened to me the same way. I did considerable searching looking for a driver for my ethernet card. I finally found it on DriverGuide.com.Thank you for your time. In a civilized society, you, sir, would be King.
