Cannot Upgrade to Win98SE

I have 'inherited' an old Gateway PC with Win98 installed it. I also
have a Win98 SE Updates disk from when I had an AMD K6 machine.

When I try to update the Gateway with the update disk I get a message
telling me that I my operating system is already updated! It isn't, I
can assure you.

Might it be because the Gateway has IE6 and OE6 installed?

I'm reluctant to wipe it and re-install from scratch as I did not
inherit the drivers disk with the machine.

Many thanks,

Andy

No, it's because the Win98SE disk is an OEM disk, not to be used as an
upgrade, only intended to install to a freshly formatted partition. Suggest
you do just that -- reformat and then use the Win98SE CD to install.

Before doing anything, please provide more information.  What is the exact
error message you are getting?  Is the CD you have actually an **Updates**
CD?  When you right click My Computer and select properties, what system is
identified on the General tab?

Hi Gary,

No, the updates disk is not an OEM version - it has a key code on the
jewel case. If memory serves, I had MS mail me the CD as I did not wish
to download it on dial-up at the time.

Hi Ron,

Unfortunately, I've put the machine away for the time being. However
the general tab says 'Microsoft Windows 98' and gives the version as
'something.something.1998' not .2222

Error message says 'Windows 98 updates cannot run as a later version of
the operating system is already installed.'

Thank you both for taking the time to help me.

Sorry, I misread your original. I think you're probably right about the
versioning of IE that is causing the choke. No, I don't know the workaround,
though I'm fairly certain one exists. If no further response to this thread
is forthcoming, I'd repost.

Personally, I'd reformat and clean install. The inevitable problems with
version histories can be mind-boggling.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Gary on this one as I have never heard of
that problem (nor can I find anything on it) using an Updates disk.  Before
doing anything, go to the Gateway web site and see what drivers are
available for download for your machine.

Thank you for your input guys. If I stumble across anything, I'll drop
you a line.

Cheers,

Andy
