Win 98 will start

Using win 98 on computer that had never been on internet. Used a British
Telecom CD to download boardband drives. Went throught set up proccedure O.K.
Untill Internet Explorer6 popped up saying look for a newer verison ,
update. yes or no . preesed Yes. 30 seconds of waiting then pop up say you
need to reboot. Tried rebooting nothing has work since. The boot sequence
starts untill the first screen with windows 98 on and stops. Nothing more
happens.
