Hello,

My computer runs Window 98 and has a second removable hard drive (d:) used
to store daily backups.

Recently I attempted to install Window XP Home on my removable drive (larger
and faster then the main drive c:) as I wanted to slowly and without
interruptions get used to using my business software under XP.

The installation was unsuccessful as whenever I restarted my computer the
following message popped up:

· Window could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
· <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
· Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I have reinstalled XP a few times again even with the format option but
always receive the same message.
Now even after reformatting the removable drive and restored it to
pre-installation attempt I still get the same message.

What have I done wrong?
How can I install XP successfully and if not,
How can I remove that message?

Hoping someone more knowledgeable is able to help me,

Jack
