Is the following statement true of Windows 98 (response from V-COM TS):
It is a Windows limitation - Windows cannot boot up off a slave drive, only
the primary master harddrive.
System Commander's main functionality is to manage multiple OS's on the main
primary harddrive;
it cannot boot OSs off the slave drive, unless its Linux.
Does anyone know if this is true?
Please advise.
Thanks, Tracey
I do NOT understand how (his or her) reply can be right:
#1 If I change the primary master to NONE in the BIOS, Windows on the 2nd
drive still boots OK and 2nd drive is still the primary slave.
#2 I had it working before:
--- while I was having intermittent hang ups one of the things I tried was
to Ghost the partitions and run the Maxtor Factory recertification program
which reformats and check the entire hard drive.
--- when I restored the Ghost images and tried to re-install System
Commander 8, I could choose the Windows installation on the 2nd drive, but
it would just hang up without any error messages.

No, it is not true. You can boot off from a slave drive if the boot manager
you are using can do it. System Commander apparently cannot although I
don't know that to be a fact since I have never used the program. BootIt NG
can boot from the slave drive: BootIt Next Generation is available from:
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/
and it does partitioning, makes a compressed image, does many other
partitioning chores and is a boot manager. It is not quite as easy to use
as Partition Magic but it is half the cost and has more features. Unlike
the crippled PMagic demo, BING is a *full function* demo you can try for
FREE for 30 days. The web site has a lot of support articles.
