Watch the screen for which key to press to enter setup (the BIOS) and click
it. Look for a Boot Section or a setting called Boot Device. You will want
to make the floppy disk drive the first boot device and then save the
setting and exit. Reboot and the system should read your floppy start up
disk. One thing you can try is restoring a copy of the registry dated the
last time the computer booted.
Boot with the W98 start up floppy disk--CDRom support doesn't matter. At
the A: prompt, type: C: and hit enter. At the C: prompt, type: CD
Windows\Command and hit enter. At the Command prompt, type: scanreg
/restore and hit enter.
Once the registry restore screen appears, select the date of the registry
that you wish to restore by highlighting it and then click enter. If you
see a registry named: Rbbad.cab, that is a copy of the registry that has
already been replaced.

to get to the bios on a Compaq you need to hit F10
(at least that works for all Compaq's i've seen)
