Not a sound . . .

Advice requested trouble-shooting total lack of sound
in a 2-year-old 2.2 GHz system under Win98SE.
The system is set to play the MS arpeggio wave on boot.

1.  Two weeks ago the sound system started buzzing
a few seconds after boot.

2.  Yesterday sound played OK as usual (Control Panel/
Sounds, MP3 files, WAV files) until I replaced the PC's
floppy drive (defective).  Since then there has been no
sound of any sort.

This PC has sound on the ASUS P4P800S main
board, with SoundMAX audio software, version 4.
On inspection I found in Control Panel/Multimedia/Devices
7-fold duplications of SoundMAX entries:  so removed
all and reinstalled from the ASUS CD from scratch
-- still no sound.

All I can think of is that the DC power converter (1200 mA)
for the Koss speakers might have died (suggested by the
buzz at boot #1).  But a tiny speaker is built into the PC as
well and I hear nothing.

Don,

Did you check the control panel entries in safe mode?  How about the control
panel /sounds, video and game controllers--did you check there?  Is there a
wire running from the mobo to the sound jack on the back of the case?  If
so, did the wire get knocked off when you replaced the floppy drive?  Any
chance you can try the speakers on another PC?

Aargh . . .
That did it:  speakers work fine on the old PC upstairs, but are
dead on the newer system:  must be the SOB component
(the SOB!  I did not expect this from ASUS hardware.)
