I needed to add a sound card (when the speaker circuit
failed in the ASUS motherboard (Sound on Board) and
earlier trials showed I needed 24-bit circuitry. (A cheap
16-bit card worked OK but with unacceptable quality
for editing in Magix Audio Cleaner.)
Creative Labs web site has abundant detail, but I could
not find in local stores any suitable audio card that would
run under Win98. The web site responded to a query
immediately, informing me that only one Sound Blaster
out of many dozens would provide 24-bit audio under
Win98SE -- the Audigy Platiinum outfit with external
drive. This is no longer sold in stores but is available
(factory refurbished) on eBay.
I have downloaded the manual for this product but do
not yet understand all its ramifications. The external drive
seems used mainly for either video games or recording live
music, neither of which I do. The main question is
whether I need to instal the ext. drive (and its own
card, connected to the sound card) in order to restore
full Audio Cleaner functionality. I would guess not.
Opinions?

I dunno, Don, but I see no reason for the external drive for your apparent uses.
Would something like this work for you?
