Hi:

I hope somebody can help, I have an old Compaq laptop that is ready to die,
but I need to grab a few files from it.  Everytime I try to boot, it drops
into Registry Checker, tells me a good registry has been restored, and asks
for restart, but on restart it keeps dropping back into Registry Checker
(looping).

Also drops into Registry Check when trying to go into Safe Mode.

Do a RAM test...
that error can be caused by bad memory

BTW...
if you have only a little data you need to save...
your machine should at least boot to dos...
and you can get the data from there

Hi Philo:

If I had a floppy drive, that would work.  Thanks, though.

The problem's gotten worse, anyway.  I think the laptop just died, because I
can't even turn it on.

Start the laptop, tap the F8 key repeatedly until the startup menu appears and
select "Command Prompt".  Then type "scanreg  /restore", press "Enter" and
restore the oldest available registry.

...which is a pointless exercise if the RAM is shot - and these symptoms are
classic RAM-defect ones

Thanks, Ben, for the suggestion.  Sorry to say that it's too late for that,
the laptop is truly dead now.  It won't even power up.

Make sure the battery is in properly. It should at least turn on.

Bill:

It's funny you mentioned that.  Because when I was trying to disassemble =
the beast, I pulled out the battery, to see if I could get access to the =
hard drive and copy files using a 2.5 to 40pin IDE cable.

Anyway, after tossing and turning it, I managed to get it to boot, which =
means I can extract my files with my Attache drive.

The damn thing refuses to die.  But I am happy I can recover my work.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!!!
